Welcome to Livorno, Italy

Very early this morning, we finally arrived in Livorno, Italy. Now if you read the blog on Monday, you would have seen that due to a mess up by the Port Authority of Livorno, our parking space was not available for Tuesday, and we ended up doing circles in the middle of the ocean, while waiting for our parking bay to free up today. Well after an incredibly bumpy night at sea, with the ocean trying its best to throw us around, we arrived in Livorno at around 6am. Now Livorno is nothing special in terms of visiting as a holiday destination, as it really offers nothing except a huge industrial port, however it is the gateway to Tuscany / Florence  / Pisa.

As we had already visited Florence in our visit here in 2008, we decided to do something different. As Livorno is really in the middle of nowhere, we decided it was important to do a shore excursion with the ship, and we decided on Cinque Terre.

Cinque Terre is a portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. With Cinque meaning “Five” and terra meaning “land”; it is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our tour today, we visited 3 of the 5 cities, being Manarola, Vernazza and Monterossa.

On 25th October 2011, the cities of Vernazza and Monterossa were very badly damaged by flooding, which caused a mudslide. They have pictures around the city of the damage caused by the mud slide, and it is devastating. It was very impressive to see how they have since recovered, with very little sign of the damage remaining, other than a bit of construction.

The views from Cinque Terra are breathtaking, and I will leave you with the photos to paint the pictures, as they say, A picture is worth a thousand words. I will hopefully be blogging to you from Monaco tomorrow, but with the current sea conditions I have my doubts.. but still holding thumbs!
